I will admit that as a eternal romantic, Valentine’s Day is one of my biggest and favorite holiday! I know…it’s crazy.
As a young girl, it was all about getting that one special Valentine’s card from my boyfriend, then as I got older, I wanted a stuffed bear along with the card. Time passed and the more grandiose I expected the gift to be…everything from flowers delivered to the job, expensive dinners, diamonds, and…the list goes on. Yep, hooked, lined, and sinker into the commercialism of the Day. However, let’s take a look at the history of Valentine’s Day….
This is one story:
The Legend of St. Valentine
The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?
The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. (taken from History.com)
So see, I had it all wrong…the smaller the better….hmmmmmmmmmmm.
This Valentine’s Day is extra special and unique….it will be the first one that I share with my Husband! All week, I have been giving him little treats to express my love. His actually Valentine’s gift is also small, but it is indeed meaningful, loving, and most of all just about us! I really hope he likes it and I know he will see the love that went into it. Now on my end…I don’t expect much..flowers (tulips…no roses for this girl!) and something thoughtful. Something that is totally about celebrating our love and us! Besides, we celebrate our love with each other everyday…for that was a part of the vows we took and the vision we made for our marriage.
So what are your plans for this Valentine’s Day? What are you expecting???
Peace, Life,Love, Faith
